PONY

We never fucked after we stopped
being in love.
This was one of our many charms,

like when you came over in the beginning
with a bouquet and said, I don’t really know
how to do this. We were people.

I wanted to see your mouth in the morning
before it opened. I wanted to see
the pony you told me slept standing up.

I imagined it awake all night,
its eyelashes like exotic rugs.
